Timothy Dalton was always my favourite till I saw Toby Stevens Rochester,

There's one very good reason they left out the scene in Jane's room - the dressing table was circa 1940!

I can see why everyone loves Timothy Dalton. But I have to agree that Toby Stephens is number one. His acting was superb. And it is nice to see Rochester who is at least less angry and loud, but more passionate and gentle. Also the chemistry between Toby and Ruth is undeniably better than anyone else.

I love Rochester by Dalton and by Welles. They both are generally charismatic actors. In the novel Rochester is not realy handsom and rude, but still charismatic. Jane was not attracted to that calm and good priest. He's boring for her or something. Just Welles randition is a movie and many scenes are cut. But I like Welles more wolnerable inside Rochester. It feels like as Jane, he is a good man, caught in unfortunate circumstances.

I vote for Orson Welles. I have yet to see Mr. Dalton's work. William Hurt was wooden.

My ranking is Toby, then Ciaran, then Dalton, then Orson Wells, then William Hurt. To me, Hurt is too low energy to play Rochester.

The music is all wrong for this piece, too loud and overpowering and much too frenetic. Also, I would have appreciated a bit of dialogue thrown in, rather than the inappropriate music. Dalton is the best Rodchester, with the exception that he was much too handsome. Other than that, his moodiness, sullenness, temperament, and gruffness was spot on.

Noticing all the pro-Dalton comments-a little surprised to not see comments that Dalton (“the perfect Byronic Rochester”) also portrayed Heathcliff in a 1970s movie version of Emily Brontë’s Wuthering Heights.

I like all the movies and have watched them many times, with the exception of the one with William Hurt. Jane's running down the road, at the same time Bertha is starting a fire? They didn't even try.

Wow! Did nothing but Timothy Dalton fans or bots hog this video giving opinions here? To me Orson Welles will always be the best actor to inhabit that role. Period!

They also cut some scenes from the DVD and digital versions (where episodes last 50 minutes) compared to the original broadcast (57 minute episodes). Here are the scenes cut from the first episode: 1. Jane's emotional conversation with her aunt before Brocklehurst's visit and her being sent to school. 2. A short scene of Jane's lessons with Adele, showing that several months have passed and Jane's subsequent visit to Rochester's empty study, where her attention is drawn to his collections of butterflies and beetles. 3. Immediately after Jane's conversation with Mrs Fairfax about Grace Poole (in the cut version we instantly switch to Jane in bed), the full version features a scene of an outdoor biology lesson from Rochester. In this scene Rochester tells Adele about a rare bird, the description of which makes it clear that he is talking about Jane. Afterwards, Jane and Rochester talk about Adele. Upon returning to the house, Jane notices an ominous painting on the wall. It is only after this that we see Jane in bed.

Timothy Dalton IS Mr. Rochester. The best of all. Even better than the latest version (2011) with Michael Fassbender, who it is not in this video.

Jane Eyre does need to be updated for 2023 in one respect. To stop bleeding, put direct pressure on the wound and do not stop applying pressure until the bleeding has stopped or a proper bandage can be applied. I was so glad the 2006 Stephens and Wilson version got that right! DO NOT do what the book says to do. It horrified me when I reread that passage in 2023. Having Jane and Rochester lie kissing on a bed did not bother me either. Don't people think that people did that in 1848 even if they did not write books about doing that?

I agree with your number one. Toby Stephens was superb! I think the Jane by Ruth Wilson also made this a better version--along with the playful dialogue which was no doubt also the result of inspired screenwriting and directing. The romantic duo were sparring partners and the fact they loved each other was more readily felt and believed because their relationship was so rich and their characters were so well developed even in just 4 episodes. A 2 hour movie cannot achieve the richness of the novel in my opinion. This was not just a brooding Rochester by Stephens...and yes, the "Do you think me handsome Jane?" question was ridiculous coming from such an attractive Rochester! But that was okay by me! What is true is that this is a fantastic story and we are blessed to have so many visions and versions of this remarkable novel. Kudos to Charlotte Brontë! I suggest listening to the superb audiobook of the novel. It is narrated by Thandiwe Newton and she does a fantastic job of changing her voice to project Rochester.

There is no other Rochester than Timothy Dalton's Rochester..period

Well, actually none of these gentlemen played Mr. Rochester as perfectly as Michael Jayston did in the 1973 mini series. Such a shame YT has been blocking it.
